[ cheers and applause ] >> the president surrounded himself with children who wrote him letters about guns following the massacre in connecticut. one wrote there should be a limit on how many guns a person can own. >> letting schools use federal funding to improve school safety, by hiring more security. appoint a director of, reinstate a ban on assault weapons, limit high capacity magazines and create a background check system for all gun sales. >> i believe most gun owners agree we can respect the second amendment while keeping few from inflicting massive harm. ktvu's noelle walker has more. >> reporter
as well. >> thank you, christian. we should also mention we will have updates on our facebook page, ktvu on facebook, and we will be tweeting out any information as we get it as well. >> i was just talking to bill. he said a little bit of drizzle in that area right now. >>> what are you seeing right now, bill? >> on that fire, there's some sprinkles, high humidity. that's great news for firefighters. not such great news for the bay area, the afternoon commute. the showers are light but it doesn't take much. it's slippery. you can see the back edge of this weather system now. look where it's coming from? the south. that's why it's so warm out. temperatures are in the 50's and even low 60's. you can see where the showers are and where they are not. basically all nine bay area counties have some type of shower activity, but it is very light. when you see the different gradients in the grain, up here it might be a little lighter, up here a little heavier. it's pretty obvious. but this is real light stuff. all these bay areas, the windshield wipers are on intermittently. we'll be tracking it.

[ yelling ] >>> punches are thrown on the courthouse steps between family members am broiled in a controversial murder case. good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. a routine court hearing erupted into a fight between two families in san jose today. one man's family wants justice for a dead father and the other is calling for leniency for the man who shot him. >> reporter: the hearing lasted about a minute while outside was the real drama where supporters from both sides got into a fight. family and friends of 26-year- old ricardo hernandez streamed out of the santa clara county courthouse this afternoon after showing up to support the second degree murder suspect. they were taunted by the family of 36-year-old christopher soriano, the man killed december 31st in san jose in what police describe was a citizens arrest gone wrong. >> i'm a widow with five kids now. >> hey, hey! in san leandro, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> now to the high surf advisory in effect on this eve of the mavericks big wave surfing competition. we have live team coverage for you tonight. mark tamayo -- [inaudible] mark's at the coast. patti is leave and we start with her. >> reporter: rescuers say these high wind advisories can attract waves. a hand full of surfers were taken away from the currents. from the air and the water, rescue crews from the coast guard and the san francisco fire department search for a group of surfers reported missing around 12:30 this afternoon. >> made contact with surf who had been in the water. >> reporter: the surfers were catching waves behind the cliff restaurant this is cell phone video shot by a surfer taking a break on the dash surfer take -- shot by a surfer taking a break. >> we had visual on them early on. there was confusion as to whether three or four of the surfers had been successfully brought to the beach. >> reporter: with three of the surfers unaccounted for, searchers started to help others for their help. by 2:00, all
